Thrombotic Stroke
Thrombotic strokes are the strokes that are generally caused by a thrombus or a blood clot. This thrombus or the blood clot develops in the arteries that supplies blood to the brain. A Thrombotic stroke is specifically seen in elderly persons, those having high levels of cholesterol and atherosclerosis.
Many times the symptoms of the Thrombotic stroke are seen occurring all of a sudden, frequently when you are asleep or in the early morning. It may also occur over a period of hours or days gradually. This is known as a stroke-of-evolution. In a Thrombotic stroke the thrombus is formed inside the arteries of the brain and hence causes a blockage in the flow of the blood to the different brain parts. Thus, the brain cells that do not receive adequate supply of blood stops functioning and may die anytime. All the large and small arteries of the brain are affected by the Thrombotic strokes. Thrombotic strokes when occur in the small arteries of the brain are called lacunar strokes.
Symptoms of Thrombotic Stroke
* A severe headache with no such known causes
* Loss of balance, dizziness
* Confusion, trouble in speaking or understanding anything
* Weakness of the legs or the arms, particularly one side of the body.
All these symptoms are seen suddenly and there is no particular caused to be explained for the occurrence of these symptoms.
Thrombotic stroke must be treated immediately to be effective as early as within three hours after the symptoms are visible. It is very important to go for emergency medical treatments. The medicine available for the treatment of a Thrombotic stroke is called tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA). It is given through the intravenous line (IV). This medicine has the capacity of dissolving clots and restoring the normal flow of the blood in the brain. The people who receive this medication treatment have less chances of following a stroke in the future. Another medication available for treating the Thrombotic stroke is heparin. It is administered to the patients for preventing the blood clots that already exist from getting bigger. It also prevents the formation of the new clots.
