Tertiary Prevention Of Troke
Stroke is the third leading cause of death among the adults. There are three levels for the prevention of stroke these three levels are primary prevention, secondary prevention and tertiary prevention. The tertiary prevention level goes beyond the secondary preventive measures for addressing the care of the individual who has been already suffering from a stroke previously. The goal of the tertiary measures is to prevent the second or the third stroke and thereby reduce the disabilities of the patient. The patient is rehabilitated for re-establishing complete independence and hence improving the quality of life.
The different research studies clearly indicate that those who suffer from recurrent strokes have comparatively poor outcomes as compare dto the first stroke. Prevention methods should not be ceased after one has experienced a stroke. There are many things that can be done to prevent the disastrous effects of strokes.
* Mobilization at an early stage decreases thrombosis in the veins of the legs, respiratory difficulties, incontinence, urinary tract infections, skin break down, contractures and depression.
* Rehabilitation heightens their independence, the ability of the individual to go back home and take some pre-stroke activities.
* Continuing your participation in recreational, educational, social and physical activities will improve your health as well as quality of life substantially.
There are 2 stroke prevention interventions that have been identified to improve the public health:
1. Carotid Endarterectomy- This is effective for individuals having high grade carotid stenosis and symptoms of cerebrovascular like the stroke. They are generally treated by the surgeons.
2. Anticoagulation with Warfarin- It is suitable for patients having atrial fibrillation. They have the capacity of preventing the serious outcomes of the stroke, thereby reducing the risk of stroke or the disabilities leading to stroke.
Lifestyle modifications- Using tobacco, poor nutrition and inadequate regular physical activities are the major risk factors for the stroke. So to diminish the effects of stroke you need to reduce and gradually quit smoking, follow a regular routine if atleast half an hour of physical exercises and consuming a well balanced diet. Modify your lifestyle in order to stay away from strokes.
