The symptoms of stress can be many and varied. The symptoms of stress will vary with the type of stress. And the symptoms of stress will vary with the individual who is under stress, depending upon whether the stress is chronic or short lived stress, symptoms of stress will vary considerably. If the type of stress we are talking about is the stressful situation you find yourself in perhaps at work where the situation is not life threatening, but you are just emotionally uncomfortable, the symptoms of stress in that situation will be markedly different from the symptoms of stress you may experience if you are suddenly in a life threatening situation.

If you are at work and your boss has just called you into his office and he seems angry about something, then the symptoms of stress that you experience might include a slightly more rapid heart rate and maybe butterflies in your stomach. But if you are suddenly in a near head on collision between two speeding cars, the symptoms of stress you might experience could include drastically increased heart-rate, gasping for breath, tremors, and sweating.

The symptoms of stress will vary with whether the stress is chronic or short lived also. With chronic stress, you may experience life changing alterations in your behavior. Your symptoms of stress might include the inability to sleep. Your symptoms of stress might include loss of appetite. Your symptoms of stress might include compulsive overeating. Your symptoms of stress might include alcoholic drinking. With chronic stress, your symptoms of stress might include many kinds of compulsive behaviors like gambling, sex, risk taking behaviors and drug use.

Chronic stress can be very debilitating and our coping mechanisms may be be the most healthy things we can do. And with chronic stress and its resulting burnout, the symptoms of stress may also include depression with its whole host of symptoms. Short-lived stress is easier to deal with. Some of the symptoms of stress under these conditions might be the same as with chronic stress, but usually they are not as pronounced or as extreme and debilitating. If you are under stress over a deadline at work, you might reach for a candy bar or drink an extra cup of coffee, but you probably wouldn't show the more extreme symptoms of stress and go on a major eating binge or start taking hard drugs. But you would still be displaying symptoms of stress.

Symptoms of stress vary and so do our reactions to them. When symptoms of stress occur, the best thing you can do is to be aware of them as symptoms of stress. These symptoms of stress are signals to you that you are under stress and that you need to do something about it.
