Stroke Victims



Stroke is death of brain cells due insufficient blood supply to brain. It causes because of blockage in brain artery due to clot or bleeding in brain artery. A person who suffers from the stroke is a stroke victim. The damage depends upon the severity of the stroke. Ischemic stroke victims are recovered fast while Hemorrhagic stroke victims may suffer a disability of some body parts. The treatment depends on the cause and extent of damage. Ischemic stroke victims are recovered by medication; While Hemorrhagic stroke victims may need surgery. Most of the time they need rehabilitation programs also.

Though physically only patient is affected, really the whole family of victim is affected by the stroke. Hence the victims and their families must have support for fast recovery.

Family members must discuss and participate the treatment so it becomes easier for the victim to face the new revised life after the stroke. Family members of victims should support the patient's efforts to participate in rehabilitation. Patient can enjoy playing cards, listening radio, watching TV, playing a board games with the family members which gives relaxation to all. If there are problems with patient's speech, then the speech language pathologist's advice must be taken to help him. Victim and the family members must attend some of the rehabilitation sessions. This helps them to learn how rehabilitation works. Patient should be encouraged to practice skills learned in rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation program should be carefully selected. Some hospitals offer inhouse programs and some offer outpatient programs which enables the patient to visit the rehabilitation sessions. Some professionals visit home to treat the patient. Many patients may not need full rehabilitation program but need help with specific functions and physical activities.

Whole family of the stroke victim has to learn how to adjust in a new world with the patient. People who care for the patient must also adapt. They are suffering the loss of usual behavior of patient and in addition they are worried and overwhelmed by their new responsibilities. The adjustments are physical and emotional. Caregivers also need support and some time to enjoy their own life. Even when family members and friends are not able to help, support groups can help them.
