Stroke Recovery

The most important part of recovering from a stroke is rehabilitation. It helps you to relearn your basic skills like speaking, dressing, walking and eating. Rehabilitation helps to improve the function of a person and make them as independent as possible. The rehabilitation process depends on the type and effect of the stroke that includes a rehabilitation hospital, a rehabilitation unit in the hospital, home therapy, home with outpatient therapy and a long-term care facility that provides therapy and skilled nursing care. The rehabilitation should be started within two days after the stroke has occurred specially with medically stable patients and continued even after leaving the hospital. It can take months or years to improve the condition in some cases it might worsen.

The stroke rehabilitation depends on several factors like extent of disability, ability to tolerate the intensity of rehabilitation in terms of hours or stamina, availability of finance, insurance coverage and your geographical area. Rehabilitation services includes speech, physical, occupational, language, therapeutic recreation and psychological services.

Physical functioning and skills like walking, motions, partial or one-sided paralysis, faulty and foot drop can be restored by physical therapy. Re-learning the skills like eating, going to bathroom, dressing and taking care of oneself is involved in occupational therapy. Speech and language therapy involves techniques to reduce the problems in communicating, thinking or swallowing. Therapeutic recreation introduces social activities like swimming, going to museums, plays, libraries, taking music and art lessons, which helps in developing social skills. Exercises play an important role hence walking, bending and stretching can help your body to become flexible and strengthen the body.

The patients get financial aid from the employers who provide private disability insurance benefits or through a disability insurance plan, which you have purchased on your own. Also the Social

Security Administration (SSA) has two programs that provide money which are the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

It takes time to process the paperwork so make sure you contact them as soon as possible.
