Stroke and coma are considered as the 2 extreme risks of diabetes. Coma is the state of unconsciousness of the body as well as the mind for unknown length of time. He is not at all aware of his surrounding and what is happening around him. He is unable to respond or sense the environment. It is such a state of the body that there is no hope of recovery. There are different causes for coma: diabetes, stroke, infections or brain tumor.

There are chances that people can return back to normal stages from the coma that has resulted due to the stroke. This recovery will depend upon a number of factors like the cause of the illness, how severe the injury is and which part of the brain has been affected.

Signs and symptoms of coma: the person who has gone in the state of coma may be either due to the stroke or some or her varying causes, will exhibit the following signs and symptoms:

1. Lack of responses to the given stimuli like light or pain

2. Closed eyes

3. Inability to be aroused.

4. Unconscious state of mind, not aware about the surrounding and the environment around him.

5. Lack of sleep-wake cycles.

Causes of coma- Coma is the ultimate cause of the stroke experienced by the person. Other causes include:

* Suicidal attempts that involve firearms

* Accidents during transportation

* Sports activities

* Acts of violence like child abuse or assaults.

* Diabetes, organ failure, infections or Reye’s syndrome

Once coma is encountered, you should also know how to cope up with it. You can recover from the lasting effects of coma through proper rehabilitation. Occupational therapy, physical therapy, physical medicines, speech and language therapy, psychiatry as well as social support can help you for faster recovery.

Severe strokes can end up into conditions of coma. So it always better suggested that “Prevention is better than Cure”. As soon as you experience any of the warning signals of the stroke, see your doctor and get medical help at the right time. As we are all aware that “A stitch in Time saves Nine”. Proper treatment at the beginning will save you from the worse effects in the end.
