We are all familiar with stress. The hectic pace of our modern lives puts us all under stress. The noise, the crowds, the pollution all put us under stress. All the bills we have to pay just to stay alive put us under stress. All day long there re pressures that put us under stress. All day long, there are pressures that put us under stress. We race against the clock feeling the stress weighs down on us. We get nervous. Will things go right? Will things go wrong? All stress. Worry, anxiety, fear. All stress. Tress, stress, stress. Until we feel we can’t take any more stress. We are at our breaking point.

The stress we feel is making us go mad. We feel as if we might crack under all the stress. There is just not enough time in the day to get it all done. Work, family, community. All pulling us in different directions. Stress at home, stress at work. There is even stress in our church. There is no refuge from stress. It is all on our shoulders. We run around looking this way and that like rats in a maze. Fleeing from pain causes us stress. Pursuing pleasure causes us stress. Wanting to avoid blame causes us stress.

Longing for praise causes us stress. Seeking fame causes us stress. Trying so very hard to avoid dishonor causes us stress. All of this stress makes us edgy. All of this stress makes us wary. Who can we trust? For how long can we trust them? When will they turn on us? All of this stress. Stress, making us think crazy thoughts. Stress, making us do crazy things. Stress, making us long for a way out, but that just causes more stress. Who could help us get out from under all this stress? Why would they?

What would they want? How much would it cost? Can I trust them? What if they are under as much stress as I am? Maybe they are desperate to get out from under all of their stress. They might be willing to do anything. How could I possibly trust them? This is just more stress. More stress than I can handle. There is now way out of this stress. It is a trap. A death trap. Stress, anxiety, fear. More stress. More stress. So much stress that you can’t sleep. You feel the stress in your dreams when you do get some fitful sleep.

You wake up stressed. You go to bed stressed. You sleep stressed. Too much stress is bad for your health so you worry about that and add more stress to your life.
