Since it is usually very difficult to control your environment in order to prevent stress, stress control usually refers to learning to control your reactions to stress. This type of stress control addresses both your physical and your emotional reactions to stress. Stress control is practiced to help mitigate the negative effects of stress and stress control is also aimed at helping you harness the power of stress so you can use stress to your advantage. Very often, stress control techniques start with learning how to control your breathing when you are under stress. A big part of stress control is to remain fully oxygenated and if the minute you are under stress, you start breathing rapidly and shallowly, then stress will be controlling you, not visa, versa.

In proper stress control, it is important to understand the warning signals and know when you are about to go into stress mode so that you can consciously choose to practice stress control by being aware of your breathing. Your grandmother always told you when you were getting upset to take a deep breath and count to ten. I guess you didn’t realize she was so expert and that her stress control advice was tried and true. Stress control by slowing down your breathing not only gives you a chance to think things through before doing anything rash, but stress control through breath control puts you in charge and keeps your body and your brain well oxygenated so you can perform at your peak and think clearly.

Stress control through breath control will keep you thinking clearly and not just going into panic mode automatically. The fight or flight response that is wired into your autonomic nervous system isn’t always your best answer to stress in the modern world so stress control techniques can come in very handy. WE can’t have you running out of the boardroom every time you get stressed or have you punching out your boss every time he stresses you out. A more productive, long term approach is to master some simple stress control techniques that will help you cope with all the different stresses that you will face in the modern world. Stress control techniques can save your health, sanity and save your job. Stress control doesn’t take a lot of training or even that much effort once you get in the habit of stress control and not just letting stress control you. Stress control techniques will come in handy everyday.
