Speech Therapy For Stroke Victims

A stroke is caused when the blood supply to the brain is stopped or interrupted due a clot in the blood or bleeding. The resulting consequences of a stroke are far more devastating. The primary consequence is death. But the worst part of a stroke is the permanent disability. The disability may not be only physical because a stroke also alters the way of thinking of the patient. The patient feels more depressed and depression is the worst part of a post stroke life.

One of the most devastating mental consequences of a stroke is the impairment of communication. The stroke, occasional called a "brain attack", can bring about some of the biggest mental disabilities. The best part of it is that the medical community has developed therapies that bring back the ability of communication of the patient. This also helps in the decreasing of the post stroke depression. The speech disability can occur right on the onset of a stroke. The result may be slurred speech or even permanent disability in speaking.

The speech therapists assess and diagnose the situation and then decide the treatment required for the rehabilitation. These therapists work with those patients who cannot speak or have difficulty in producing sounds. These problems include speech rhythm or fluency problems like stuttering or slur in the speech. The speech therapists keep a record of the initial evaluation, progress and the discharge of the patients. This helps to pinpoint problems and track the progress of the patient. This justifies the cost of the treatment and also while applying reimbursement.

The working system of the speech therapists is often in very clean surroundings. They generally work on a table with clean and very comfortable surroundings. If working on patients in a medical setting, they work at the patient's bed. Some of the therapists may give their services at the home of the patient. The job may not be physically demanding but requires immense knowledge, concentration and every attention to the detail of the surrounding. The most important detail to be taken under consideration is the emotional requirement of the patient.
