Small Pox Vaccination

Small pox vaccine contains vaccinia virus which is a type of pox virus. It is a live virus and so must be handled carefully. But once vaccinated, you will never have small pox in life time. The vaccine may create body pain, fever etc that are normal. In case if you have any other severe problem, immediately inform your doctor. In fact the disease is almost eliminated all over the world with the help of this vaccine.

Small pox vaccine provides long term protection and 95 % of the people vaccinated are prevented from infections. But vaccinating after getting the disease may not that much efficient. So it is advisable to prevent them by vaccinating in childhood. The vaccine will not be given with the normal needle. Bifurcated needle is use to provide the vaccine. The needle will prick the skin several times within few seconds. It will be usually given in upper arm and the vaccine will leave a mark in your skin. If the vaccination is successful, you will get a small red bump. It will be itchy in the first few days. Then it will get pus. After a weak, it will become dry and will leave a small scar.

As the vaccinia virus in small pox vaccine is live, care must be taken to prevent them from spreading to other parts of the body. Pregnant woman and mother who is feeding her baby should not get this vaccine. Normally the affected person will be given vaccine regardless of his health conditions. Because small pox is a dangerous disease that may even cause death. The person vaccinated will show recovery within 3 days.

Vaccinia virus will not cause small pox. But care should be taken as they are live virus. Wash your hands immediately after giving the vaccine and put bandage over the vaccinated area. Touching the vaccinated place before it healed may cause vaccinia infections like fever and head ache. But vaccinias will not spread through air.

Vaccination to people with weak immune system may cause death. So those people must consult the doctor before using vaccines. In US, small pox vaccines are not provided to all since the disease was eradicated before 40 years from the world.
