Significance Of Vitamins In Pregnancy And Breastfeeding

Every woman should be aware of birth defect and therefore she should try to prevent the defects and get healthy baby. For this, it is necessary to have vitamins while getting pregnant, in the period of pregnancy and during breast-feeding. These vitamins are just nutritional supplement to the regular diet and not an alternative for the diet.
Vitamin becomes more effective when they are supplemented with the regular, healthy and nutritious diet. Moreover, continued use of the vitamins in pregnancy and breast-feeding will reduce or turn away the chances of nutrition deficiency. During the pregnancy doctor prescribes supplement diet with the vitamins, as pregnant woman has to take care of herself and up coming baby.
Vitamins are supplemented with proper diet because intake of mere vitamins can cause certain side effects such as nausea as well as neutral tube defects like spinal bifida, and anencephaly. Therefore, to reduce or keep away such problems proper intake of vitamins along with the proper diet is necessary.
Besides this, many of the women have the deficiency of folic acid, as their regular diet does not provide the sufficient amount of folic acid. Hence, external supplement of the folic acid through vitamin becomes necessary. Generally, vitamins will give approximately 400mcg of folic acid and regular intake of this amount will prevent the neutral tube defect.
Along with folic acids, calcium also has equal importance during the pregnancy. Pregnant woman needs at least 1200mg to 1500mg of calcium daily. However, the vitamin tablets will provide just 250mg of calcium that is not at all sufficient during pregnancy. Therefore, pregnant women are advised to take the vitamin tablets along with milk, cheese, yogurt and green leafy vegetables.
During pregnancy period, absorption rate of vitamin and proportions of vitamins or minerals is preferred to be high, so that they can be absorbed by the body effectively. Generally, the prescription for Vitamin Tablets given by the physicist takes care of the required absorption rate and proportion of the body intake.
