Rubella virus cause severe defects like deafness in child, eye defect, heart problems etc. there are 70000 infant deaths caused by rubella. Yet they can be prevented. There are two combination vaccines for preventing rubella all over the world. One is MR that protects your child from measles and rubella and the other is MMR that prevents measles, mumps and rubella.

Rubella vaccines are supplied in powder form. So you must reconstitute it with the diluents provided. This vaccine may produce some small side effects like mild fever and rah. This is curable with normal medicines. It will not stay for more than a weak. Some rubella containing vaccines may cause arthritis in rare cases.

But in most cases Rubella vaccines prove to be safe and effective. In developed countries, rubella is almost eliminated with the help of vaccines. But it spreads through air. So vaccinating children at early stage can protect them from severe disabilities and even deaths. Vaccinating woman from 15 to 20 years of age will help to reduce the transmission of disease to children.

Rubella vaccine in a combined form must be given to the child as 3 doses at regular intervals. MMR vaccine is prepared from the virus grown in chicken eggs. So please inform your doctor previously if your child has allergy to eggs. There are vaccines that are not prepared from eggs.

In fact there is no age limit for receiving this vaccine. But vaccinating in early childhood is recommended. Rubella vaccine may cause mild side effects. But it is not more than the effects of not vaccinating for rubella. 90% of the people show great immunity after receiving one dose of rubella vaccine. But two or three doses will give more protection. The number of doses vary from country to country.
