It is said that prevention is always better than cure. It is very true in case of serious diseases like stroke. The stroke can result in permanent damage of brain cells and some disabilities. Once the disabilities are developed due to stroke, they are permanent and affect the lifestyle of the stroke victim. Hence, it is better to practice the preventive measures than to take the treatment when you suffer. Primary prevention of stroke involves the reduction of risk factors.

Some of the common risk factors for stroke are high blood pressure, elevated levels of cholesterol and blood glucose. The people with excessive body weight, stress and high alcohol intake are at the high risk for stroke. These risk factors are eliminated in the primary prevention of stroke.

First of all, you need to change your lifestyle. It is very essential to quit the smoking to reduce the risk of stroke. Environmental tobacco smoke is very dangerous. Excessive weight is the cause high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. They are the risk factors for stroke. Weight loss helps to lower the blood pressure and cholesterol level.

An aerobic exercise is very beneficial for good health. It also helps to prevent many diseases. It lowers the blood pressure, decreases the obesity, increases the level of HDL cholesterol and improves overall health of the heart. It is also helpful for reducing the stress and controlling the diabetes. Taking the exercises like swimming, walking, jogging and cycling is very beneficial to reduce the risk of stroke.

The stress can cause the temporary variations in the blood pressure. It is a risk factor for the brain hemorrhage or hypertension. It can also enhance the blood’s tendency to clot which can cause the ischemic stroke. Hence, use the relaxation techniques to reduce the stress.

Alcohol can be a risk factor as well as the preventive measure for stroke. Heavy alcohol consumption can increase the blood pressure and develops the risk of hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes. However, drinking small amount of alcohol helps to increase the level of HDL cholesterol and reduce the blood’s tendency to clot. Both the factors reduce the risk of ischemic stroke.

Intake of health diet is very essential for improvement of overall health. Your diet should be rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. The food items should be rich in calcium and omega-3 fatty acids. Intake of fibrous food is very necessary.
