Parenting And Alcohol
Parenting and Alcohol simply do not go together or even mix together. Even having small glass of wine along with dinner at restaurants or having beer with a hamburger at a diners makes a parent highly irresponsible.
How can parents tell their children not to drink or talk about the ill effects of alcohol if they themselves are doing it in front of their kids? This becomes all the more hard when you have to talk to teenage children about the ill effects of drinking if you do not abstain from it your self.
One way to have a glass of wine or a beer is to make sure you do it when your child is not around and that too if you must do it absolutely. But it is better that you too follow the same rules you set for your children otherwise they will end up questioning you.
There is evidence in research which shows that heavy maternal drinking during pregnancy has caused complications in the mothers and child’s health and development.
But this does not stop with only during maternity.
Parents should make sure that they do not drink while parenting. Parents who are prone to drinking find that their children are more prone to emotional and behavioral problems. Heavy drinking mothers are found to be suffering from depression and they have very poor parenting skills and have both smoking and drinking related problems.
The younger children of these parents will suffer from separation anxiety disorders while the older children especially teenagers exhibit violent behavior and are likely to turn to criminal activities or drug abuse at an early age.
These children of drinking parents also learn to experiment with alcohol and smoking at a very early age.
These parents tend to show less interest in their child’s welfare and education. Parents should begin by setting a good example at home. It will be impossible to talk to a teenager about the ill effects of alcohol and driving when the parent himself or herself does not follow it.
Talk to your children and let them know the consequences they may face if they start to drink. Try to set rules and restrictions and make sure you too as a parent follow your own rules. The moment you break your own rules then your children will not follow any rules that you may set for them.
