Vaccine discovery is major scientific tool which helps to increase public health. It has a great impact on global health conditions of human population. Vaccination is the most effective means of disease prevention especially for viral infections. Technology for vaccine development has changed a lot from 1700. Nowadays vaccines available are both live and inactivated virus vaccines.

Inactivate virus vaccines contain either weakened virus or killed virus for the purpose of vaccine. Virus are inactivated or killed with formaldehyde. Cell cultures are grown in presence of inorganic, salts, amino acids, vitamins, dextrose, and antibiotics. Then it is filtered, diluted and stabilized. However vaccines with live organisms give higher immunity than given by inactivated virus vaccines. Inactivated virus vaccines are known for their easy production and safety.

Inactivated virus vaccines give many advantages like they allow the combination of different antigens. They could guarantee long lasting immunity. There is no vaccination reaction. Usually they cost more than live vaccines and they must be administered individually.

Inactivated vaccines are used to prevent following diseases Polio, Measles, Hepatitis A, Influenza, Rotavirus. If a person's immune system is weak then inactivated virus vaccines are used to increase his immunity over longer period. It will helpful for such person. There will be mild symptoms of viral infection associated with the virus after vaccination. But there will not be any serious side effects.

Viral Vaccines are Rubella, Polio, Measles, Mumps, Hepatitis A, Influenza A & B Rotavirus, Varicella, Yellow fever vaccine. This vaccine contains a 'living' virus that is able to give and produce immunity without causing illness. For most of the healthy persons live virus vaccines are effective and safe. There may be mild symptoms associated with the virus in the vaccine. For Influenza vaccine is prepared from inactivated virus as it has to be given every year. It gives rise to immunity against the virus but the effect will be reduced after one year.

Polio virus oral dose is made from inactivated virus. In countries like India it is given to the kids every year. But in US polio vaccine is given as injection and it is attenuated virus vaccine.
