How The Active Diabetic Should Plan Meals

Physical activity is one of the pillars of good health. And fortunately for the diabetic, it is the perfect way to control the blood sugars in addition to increasing energy levels and maintaining a healthy body weight. With that said, an active diabetic must take additional precautions to stop hypoglycemia from occurring. Blood sugars can drop dangerously low if you are too active and are not putting enough fuel into your body.

Your diabetic meal plan will affect the amount of exercise you should get. It will be harder for you to meet your nutritional requirements the more physically active you are, thus putting you at a higher risk for hypoglycemia. If you exercise vigorously, or are starting an exercise program, it is smart to monitor your blood levels before and after working out.

By doing this you can best listen to the messages your body is sending you to determine how much exercise you can do. If you start to feel any of the symptoms associated with low blood sugar, like lightheadedness, then you should stop exercising immediately.

It's also smart to have a snack before working out to sustain you during the workout without spiking your blood sugar levels. For example, you may eat a granola bar and a handful of nuts to combine carbohydrates, high fiber and high-quality protein.

It's important to eat snacks with high fiber content before working out because it slows down your body from breaking down your carbohydrates. Additionally, make sure to drink plenty of water when you're working out, and always carry glucose tablets with you in case of an emergency.

And, as always, make sure you eat balanced meals to maintain your energy. If you do this, then you should not have a problem with maintaining an active lifestyle.
