Horse Flu Vaccines

The scientific name for Horse flu is Equine influenza. The name of the variety of virus is Influenzavirus A. Equine-1 (H7N7) and Equine-2 (H3N8), cause arrest in the heart muscle. The disease has a hundred percent rate of infection if a particular horse is unvaccinated. The time of incubation lasts from one to five days. Though the Virus is highly contagious adult horses rarely die on being infected. However the performance of a racing horse drops considerably and the horse can remain affected for several weeks.

Some of the direct symptoms that are noticed if the horse is infected are that the horse starts coughing in a dry and hacking manner. The animal dives into depression, starts having a runny nose and refuses to eat.

The vaccination schedule for Horse flu generally requires two to three doses of the primary course. After an interval of about six to twelve months, the booster dose is administered. In some cases, this schedule is not sufficient for immunization. Hence, to increase the protective levels administration that is more frequent is initiated.

In Britain most of the times the horses are administered with a dose once in every six months.

On 24th of August of 2007, a major out break of the Horse Flu was declared by the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries. This was the first outbreak of Horse flu in Australia. The horses in Australia have never been exposed to nor have they been vaccinated. Due to such conditions, the horses in Australia were venerable to the virus.
