Greeks, and Romans, have practiced herbal therapies. Herbal therapy is also a part of the Ayurvedic medicine system in India, in Chinese herbology, Unani-Tibb medicine and Shamanic Herbalism. Native Americans and those who practice homeopathic and naturopathic medicine also use herbal therapies.

The use of herbs in the treatment of ills is also known as folk medicine or botanical medicine, medical herbalism or herbology. Sometimes herbal medicine is extended to also include other substances as well such as bee animal parts, products, fungi, minerals and also shells.

There has been research conducted to find out if herbal remedies may be helpful for those suffering from erectile dysfunction and these studies so far have resulted in discouraging news. Herbal remedies tested were: DHEA, ginseng and propionyl-L-carnitine. It has been reported that some men have had success using herbal treatment but the studies so far do not support findings that would suggest that a majority of men would benefit or that herbs are effective enough or that they are safe to take as supplements in treating erectile dysfunction.

The studies do support that one herbal remedy marketed, as a "sexual stimulant" is actually dangerous if an individual were to use it in excessive amounts. The dangerous side effects from overuse can include high blood pressure and heart failure!

It is normal for men to experience occasional erectile dysfunction. If the erectile malfunction lasts longer than 2 months than a medical evaluation should be done to determine if there is a physical or nonphysical cause. There is treatment for erectile dysfunction, but the cause has to be determined before a treatment can be designed. Treatments are recommended according to the cause(s) and the severity of the problem.

Herbal remedies can be discussed at the time of your medical examination.

It is important to understand that those who experience persistent erectile dysfunction need to have a medical examination to rule out any physical conditions such as diabetes that may at the root of the problem. Self-treating with herbal remedies may not solve any underlying medical conditions and may delay necessary medical treatment.

Erectile dysfunction can have physical and nonphysical causes, so the first step in treatment is discovery of the cause. Herbal remedies or any other treatment will be more effective if the cause is known.

The use of herbs as therapy should always be discussed with a medical doctor, especially when used with combination of other medications. Dosage should be discussed with a professional herbalist or medical doctor.

A healthy diet has a role in all health-related conditions because our bodies function better when they have fuel to perform well. There is a place for herbs in our diet that can benefit our health. It is important to receive advice concerning the use of herbs as therapy from those who are knowledgeable not only about the herbs but about the condition we are seeking to treat.

When evaluating herbal remedies be sure to look at the source of your information for authority, and validity. There are many scams regarding herbal "cures", especially on the Internet. It is wise to always check the source of your information.

If you decide to use herbal remedies, make sure you find out if the products are safely produced, where they are manufactured and what ingredients if any are added to them. Your health may be at stake, so investigate carefully.
