Fish oil side effects are considered by many to be a mild problem to endure compared to what some see as overwhelmingly positive health benefits. But as with any change to our diets, we must be aware that there may be unpleasant consequences.

Studies have shown that since fish oil lowers blood pressure, there may be need for caution in people with naturally low blood pressure. Also, digestive problems such as indigestion and diarrhea may be lessened by taking fish oil with meals instead of on an empty stomach.

Fishy smelling breath is another complaint that users have expressed, but this can be avoided by trying pills instead of a liquid supplement. Higher quality fish oil supplements appear to have less complaints. Try several types of fish oil supplements to find the one that works best for you and your situation.

Although most fish oil side effects are mild, it is important for users to research and be certain that the supplements they buy are processed by what is called molecular distillation.

Molecular distillation ensures that if the fish oil was obtained from fish that were found in polluted waters that may have been exposed to mercury contamination, the harmful pollutants have been removed and the fish oil is safe for ingestion by humans. This is vitally important, especially for women who are pregnant or might become pregnant while taking the fish oil supplements. Mercury contamination in a developing unborn baby would be tragic and should be avoided at all costs.

Another concern is the risk of increased bleeding in those who take fish oil in large doses. Many fish oil side effects can often be avoided by taking the supplements as directed and under the guidance of a professional such as your primary care physician or a nutritionist recommended by your doctor.
