Family Life Cycle And Single Parenting
Do you know what a family life cycle is? Well it is the emotional and intellectual stages that you pass through from childhood till your retirement years as a member of a family. This is what is called the family life cycle. First you are born and then you are a child. From being a child you grow into an adolescent and from there into adulthood. Once you are an adult you work all your lives till you retire and during this period of your adult life you get married and have children.
At each stage of our life as a child, adolescent, adult, husband or wife, as a parent and grandparent later in life you would have faced many challenges in your family life and this would have caused you to develop new skills. Developing these skills help you to work your way through the changes which every family goes through.
Not everybody passes through these stages in a smooth manner as severe illness, financial problems or death of a loved one or divorce can have an effect on how well you cope in these situations.
It is important that you are able to master these skills at every stage as you develop as you may face lots of difficulty with relationships later in life. Family life cycle theory indicates that when you go through the stages successfully it will help to prevent disease and emotional or stress related disorders.

In single parenting the child only has one parent and eventually misses out the experience of growing up with the other parent. This will definitely play an important factor in the child’s family life cycle as the child would have been deprived of the love and affection and support of the absent parent. With growing up in a single parent family the child grows up missing all the advantages of the family life cycle.
