Erectile Dysfunction Oral Medications And Their Effects

Erectile dysfunction, until recently this term has been considered a subject which was better off limits. Until the late 1990's, there were no truly effective oral medications available to treat the inability to achieve or sustain an erection for sexual activity. Up to that point the only useful drugs that were available had to be injected directly into the penis or inserted into the urethra. Thankfully, treatment of erectile dysfunction is easier to diagnose and treat now due to a class of medication called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors. The available medications, Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis all help to improve erectile function with the same basic concept, and differ only in how quickly they take effect and how long the results last. The patient takes the pill an hour before sexual activity and the inhibitors work by enhancing the effects of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a chemical that relaxes smooth muscles in the penis during sexual stimulation and allows for increased blood flow.

The available drugs have slightly different chemical compositions that affect how well they work, how quickly it takes for them to work, and how long it takes for them to wear off. No studies have been done to date to determine which drug works best for men of differing ages or with differing medical conditions. Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis all have potential side effects, including headaches, stuffy or runny nose, upset stomach, may cause dizziness, diarrhea, and muscle aches. The medications include several warnings, which your doctor will discuss in further detail upon prescribing. Several factors may affect your choice of medication, including how well your body may respond to one drug over another and how long you want the effects of each dose to last. The best option is to discuss with your doctor your personal preferences which will help you to decide which of these medications may best work for you.

It is important to be aware that while these medications may help many people, not all men can safely take them. Certain medical conditions may worsen and interact with a number of drugs. Erectile dysfunction medications are dangerous when used with nitrate medications, such as nitrate medications. Nitroglycerin is typically prescribed to prevent or treat acute angina and the medications described dilate blood vessels, causing dizziness, low blood pressure, and loss of consciousness. Men with retinal disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy, should consult an eye doctor before starting an erectile dysfunction medication.

Erectile dysfunction is defined as the repeated inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It is best for any man with erectile dysfunction to have realistic expectations in the treatment plan their doctor determines for them. Occasional erectile dysfunction is a common problem, especially as men age, but with the options available today there is no reason why more men cannot achieve satisfying sexual relations more often. If you are willing to work with your doctor to help determine which medication and dosage is best for you this problem will be amended quickly. As with any drug therapy, men should use PDE-5 inhibitors only as directed by their doctors.
