Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long term disability. Also it requires a lot of money for its treatment. To counter this, a new method of treatment called Thrombolysis has been devised, which has also proved its worth and now is the most frequently used method to treat stroke patients. The only drawback of this method is that the treatment should be undertaken within three hours from the start of symptoms and the treatment may prove useless if undertaken after six hours.

The basic guideline for any stroke patient is the rapid assessment of the patient and undertaking of treatment at the earliest possible time. But this may not be the same case with all patients. But studies show that the rapid assessment a stroke victim should get is not done and the Thrombolysis method is not implemented immediately. If these few steps are taken correctly and swiftly then it will revolutionize the care of stroke patients and may save many lives.

Most of the patients that arrive into the emergency rooms with the symptoms of a possible stroke for e.g. sudden numbness, confusion, severe headache, etc. need a swift diagnosis and assessment. It is found that the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used as the best assessment technology and also the MRI has proved its worth by giving the precise assessments in most of the cases. MRI is better that the commonly used computed tomography (CT) imaging. MRI has specially proved its worth by effectively identifying patients with patients with acute ischemic stroke, who have that benefit of living normal life if given swift treatment.

The use of MRI has also facilitated the identification of difference between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes so that swift and correct treating method can be used to save the patient. Both these strokes require very different types of treatment. Therefore MRI scan is the best for the quick assessment of a stroke and its types.
