When we say single parenting we mean that the child has only a single parent who actually cares for him or her. But may not necessarily mean that the other parent could be dead. It is just that the other parent may not be available for parenting.

In the developed countries you will find an increasing number of children who are actually living away from their natural fathers. There are more number of children ho live with their mothers only than there are children who live only with their fathers. One of the most disturbing social problems in developed nations is most children do not have their father as an active parent.

In the institution of marriage it is children who act as bonding in a family to keep the mother and father together. It is when fathers are absent in the lives of children that becomes a major problem in the well being of most children. This the reason why there are many cases of crime, depression, eating disorders, teenage suicides and even drug abuse among children.

In the absence of a father in the family the mother on her own finds it extremely difficult to find financial support in child rearing and contributing towards their education. Rearing a child from birth and giving quality education is really expensive these days.

In a single parenting set up the economical problems are more and this contributes to many disadvantages experienced by the fatherless children.

It is a well known fact that a father makes unique contributions when it comes to child rearing as the parenting style of a father is entirely different from the parenting style of a mother. Mother’s style of parenting emphasizes on play which helps with the emotional development of the child. In the absence of a father this leads the child to juvenile delinquency and violence and even early sexual activity. Fathers provide for an all round healthy support in the child’s growth.

For a single parent it becomes extremely difficult especially for the mother to discipline the child as the child will certainly have grudges against the parent who is absent and this in turn will lead to bad behavioral problems. The disadvantages when it comes to single parenting out weighs when it comes to the advantages as it is not a simple task to be a single parent.
