Diphtheria Vaccines
Diphtheria vaccines are usually given as a combination vaccine DPT that gives protection against Diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus. Diphtheria is a very serious disease that spreads from infected people nose or throat to others. It can cause severe respiratory problems, heart failure, paralysis and death. Preventing them through vaccination is the best possible way. The combination may be DT or DPT. It is given as a shot in the arm or leg f the child. It is not proved that Diphtheria vaccines cause any serious effects. Mild reactions like redness or swelling in the injection spot is normal. If you have pain or redness more than a month, consult your doctor immediately.
Diphtheria vaccine at present contains aluminum contents that will eliminate the diphtheria toxics in the body. It is not proved that the aluminum in the vaccine can cause metal toxins. It is effective in almost all people who receive the vaccine. It should be given to infants at least 5 times. The number of doses may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. It is safe for pregnant woman also.
As the vaccine is prepared from inactivated toxins, it will fight against the disease causing toxins in the body well by producing heat. It will thus help to eliminate the harmful toxins that cause Diphtheria. If any one who has not received this vaccine can administer it in later stage also. The first two doses will be given for adults at one month interval. Even though it will not produce any adverse effects, over dosage may cause severe effects. People who had severe allergic reactions after receiving the first dose should not receive the second dose.
People who are suffering from mild or severe fever must postpone the vaccination. Since the vaccine is prepared from inactivated toxoids, it will not cause Diphtheria. It is mandated in US. Many countries made DTP vaccine compulsory.95 % of the people who receive the vaccine had proved to develop immunity against the disease. Adults should be given this vaccine combined with tetanus vaccine every 10 years. This is because Diphtheria causing germs are not fully eliminated from the world. It is one of the vaccine preventable diseases. So it is recommended in early childhood itself.
