Developmental diseases or disabilities are the problems which occur while a child is developing his organs. They include physica, cognitive, psychological, sensory and speech impairments that are usually identified between birth and up to age 18 years. 17% of all children have a developmental disability, and 2% have a serious development disability such as mental retardation, cerebral palsy or autism. In most cases the cause is not known to us.

Many infectious diseases are known to cause developmental disabilities which include Haemophilus influenzae type B and congenital rubella syndrome. Other causes of developmental disabilities are nutritional deficiencies of iodine and iron, environmental exposures of lead and mercury. A life lone disability may require long term care and services with special education and supervised care. Developmental diseases are costly to society and families. There is no cure for such diseases but early intense behavioral interventions benefit some children with such problems.

CDC has important role in preventing developmental disabilities. It determines the scope of the problem, identify preventable causes and establish and evaluate intervention programs.

Vaccination is one of the most effective and proven ways parents can protect their children from certain infectious diseases. Vaccinated children were more safe than the other non vaccinated when outbreak of measles and rubella were reported in US. Measles is also a dangerous diseases which may have complications like pneumonia, ear infections, brain damage, seizures and even death. Vaccination adds to the protection of the rest of the society with the persons who are vaccinated.

People therefore ensure that their children get all vaccines in full as per the schedule given by their pediatrician. They must aware of side effects of the vaccines but should not bother too much about the adverse effects. Of course the doctor will give specific instruction in individual cases as and when required.

CDC targets at epidemiological studies to investigate specific concerns. From time to time it makes the changes to increase the safety of vaccination program. A shift from whole cell pertussis vaccines to a less reactogenic acellular, and withdrawal of recommendations for rotavirus vaccine are the examples of changing policy.
