Depresion Of Stroke Victim

The stroke victim needs a physical and emotional support and encouragement during the recovery period. It will help to make good and fast recovery. The change in the lifestyle can cause depression of stroke victim. He has to depend on others for the routine activities.

The stroke victim needs confidence building and encouragement for the emotional stability. Most of the people suffering from the stroke become depressed. The people with stroke experience partial or total paralysis of the face or limb muscles. They may lose the ability of speaking. The depression can delay or affect the recovery process. The symptoms of depression of stroke victims are lack of energy, fatigue, sleeping too much or too little, feelings of hopelessness, reduced interest in the previously enjoyed activities, loss of appetite, sadness and low self-esteem.

It is believed that the brain injury induced due to the stroke is responsible for depression. Some of the brain circuits involved in the depression may be affected by the stroke. If the stroke causes more disability, the victim experiences more depression. Some patients develop minor depression, while some may develop major depression. Most of the depressions are originated within the acute period following the stroke. The onset of some depressions is during the first year of recovery period. The depression prevents the complete mental and physical recovery from the stroke.

The routine treatment for depression should not be used for the stroke victims. It can be dangerous for them. Along with seeking the psychotherapy, getting involved in the social activities and setting target for the recovery is helpful. The stroke victims should get involved in the daily activities. They should not stay isolated. They should look for a support group. It will help to provide the emotional support and some useful tips for managing the disabilities.

The aerobic and strengthening exercises are recommended for the stroke survivors. They can join the exercise class. Take proper medical treatment to relieve from the physical discomforts like muscle spasms and pain. Though the disabilities resulted from the stroke are permanent, many people are able to live active life. They can resume the daily routine and responsibilities.
