Definition Of Parenting

There are a number of ways to define Parenting. It can be said that it is the process of raising and educating a child from the time of its birth till the child is old enough to take care of himself or herself that is adulthood. Parenting has gained a lot of popularity these days as a hot topic for discussion.

Rearing a child at home by the parents is exactly the opposite of the formal education that the child receives at school. The relationship between a parent and child is entirely different from that of the relationship between a teacher and student. It is therefore necessary that the method by which the parents educate their child is entirely different from that of the teacher's.

A teacher at school educates a child in science and how to read and write but it is at home that the real important lessons of life are taught to the children by the parents.

It can be said that the term "parenting" is derived from the word "parent." To parent means to be a parent that is to fulfill parental duties to a child. Since anybody who has a child is essentially a parent it is the way they view what their parental duties may be that makes all the difference in parenting.

Parenting does not mean only providing the basic needs of the child like food and clothing .It means that parents should also provide security and all round development of the child which translates to development of the child's body, mind and the psyche of the child. Parenting should be the wholesome development of a child's physical, intellectual and emotional security and development.

Parenting is usually done by either the father or mother or both together. It is when parents are not close enough to provide care that parenting is usually taken up by relatives like uncles and aunts or even older siblings and grandparents.

In some instances where both the parents may be dead and children are parented by adoptive parents or foster parents or even god parents.

Kibbutz is a place where parenting is considered as an occupation in spite of the biological parents still being alive. The state is also vested with certain rights which allows the state to be the legal guardian incase the caregiver of the child becomes violent or dangerous.
