It has been found that studies indicate cigarette smoking as one of the important risk factors for causing the stroke. Cigarettes contain nicotine and carbon monoxide smoke that damages the cardiovascular system of the body in a number of ways. Inhaling the smoke of the cigarette produce certain effects, thus damaging the cerebrovascular system. Women thaose who are taking oral contraceptives and smoke at the same time are prone to increase their risk towards strokes.

Due to smoking, there is a gradual built up of a hard and bumpy material of atherosclerosis on the walls of the arteries. The risk for developing strokes due to the cigarette smoking is like dose-related. The more number of cigarettes you smoke, the higher is the risk towards developing stroke. Thus, it is suggested that if at all you cannot quit smoking completely, it will be beneficial for you to reduce the number of cigarettes that you smoke daily. It is never too late to cease smoking cigarette. After you stop smoking for five years, your risk of developing a stroke will disappear completely due to the cigarette smoking. You will considerably have the same risk of developing a stroke as a person of your age who has never yet smoked.

The effects of cigarette smoking also have a link with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, glucose intolerance, hypercholesterolemia, age and cardio vascular diseases. This shows that smoking has a direct effect on stroke. Heavy smokers have considerably a higher risk of stroke generally 2-4 times higher as compared to the non-smokers.

Smoking has hazardous effects on your body. It harms about all the organs that causes a number of diseases and thus declines the health of the smokers overall. The blood circulation in the body is reduces due to smoking because the blood vessels or the arteries are narrowed.

The chances of Thrombotic and Hemorrhagic stroke in men increase with cigarette smoking. Thus it is better to reduce and gradually quit smoking to avoid the strokes.
