British physician Edward Jenner discovered Vaccines in 1796. When germs enter our body our immune systems attack them partly by making antibodies to destroy the germs. But when the germs have already multiplied before our system fight back, it gives us symptoms of sickness. Vaccines cause your body to develop immunity to a disease by exposing your body to killed or weakened forms of the given germ.

Parents want their children to be healthy and spare them from serious diseases. Then they follow the vaccination schedule given by the doctor. Though there is great debate about the side effects and adverse effects of the vaccination, it has proved to be a wonderful technique to control attack of certain diseases.

Vaccination gives 90% effectiveness and mostly lifetime immunity, if the prescribed timing is followed. There are no deaths because of the side effects of DTP vaccination. The reactions are very minor like low fever, rash which are cured within short time. It is very important to vaccinate the maximum people so that population can be protected as a whole.

Vaccines are highly effective in preventing death and disability and save money in costs annually. For most of the vaccine preventable diseases, there has been a decrease of 95% in cases. Today we can see very few visible reminders of suffering, injuries and premature deaths caused by diseases that can now be prevented with vaccines. Polio vaccine is helpful in eradication of polio 90% in western hemisphere.

* Rubella, commonly known as German measles was very dangerous disease in 1960 when many infants were born with deafness, blindness, heart disease, mental retardation because rubella virus infected their pregnant mothers. Today because of effective use of vaccine rubella virus is no more threat to the children of expectant mothers.

* Now a case of meningitis due to Hamophilus influenzae type b is very rare. Before the introduction of vaccine in 1988, approximately one in 200 children, under age of 5 was affected by this disease.
