A stroke is a suspension of the blood supply to the different parts of the brain. A stroke is also called as a “brain attack” sometimes. The risk of the stroke increases by age. As the age advances, it is very risky to have strokes. There are some medicines available that decreases the clot formation and thus chances for the stroke. Woman who take birth control pills and are above the age of 35, in such woman the pills may cause blood clots.

About 7 million people above the age of 40 years and above are affected by the age related macular degeneration. The risk factors are same as for the stroke. There is controversy on the predicting value of age on stroke rehabilitation. The older patient’s show a better improvement during the rehabilitation period. But it is advised that intensive rehabilitation should not be deducted in stroke patients just because of their advancing age.

The progress of an older adult with a stroke is very much different from a young person. The different diagnosis and treatments for stroke in a young person includes drug abuse and hematologic abnormalities. Advanced age has their own particular reasons of developing a stroke that will require further investigations. The diagnosis of stroke in advanced age includes causes such as amylopid angiopathy, hyperhomocysteinemia and multi-infarct dementia.

A stroke is considered as a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment to save your life as well as to reduce the disabilities caused by it. The treatment for the stroke may differ depending upon the cause and severity. But generally, all strokes require hospitalization and intensive support and care. Blood thinners like heparin, aspirin and coumadin may be used.

As age advances, they face difficulties in swallowing. In such cases, the adult should be given nutrients and fluids necessary for their body to rebuild the energy. The members of the family should stay actively with these adults having physical limitations. Sometimes bowel and bladder control programs may be required for people of advanced age. Advanced age and stroke are closely related to each other. Take proper care and precautions to avoid them.
